What is food security?

Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.

It is built on four key pillars: availability, access, utilization, and stability, supported by the principles of sustainability and equity.

Why is it important?

Working to achieve food security is essential because hunger remains one of the most urgent global challenges.

Each year, more than 10 million people die from hunger or related diseases, while hundreds of millions continue to experience food insecurity.

This crisis is not simply about a lack of food, but about deep structural inequalities that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations and perpetuate cycles of poverty and malnutrition. Ensuring that every person has dignified, reliable access to nutritious food is an investment in global stability, public health, and the future of humanity.
